Coming Down From the Mountaintop - Elder Michael Mahoney

We have these different tropes in Christianity…   we talk about things like a “wilderness experience” or a “Damascus Road experience.” or being in the “shadow of the valley”

These are metaphors that we have drawn out of Scripture to communicate a common experience.

One is the “mountaintop experience.”   Generally it refers to a closeness, a sense of connection with God.

God reveals himself to Moses on Mt. Horeb (Mt. Sinai) as a burning bush
God reveals the Ten Commandments to Moses on Mt Horeb
God showed Moses the Promised Land
Luke of Israel from Mt. Nebo
God demonstrates his power to Elijah and the prophets of Baal on Mt. Carmel.
Jesus revealed much about the Kingdom of God on the Mount of Beatitudes
Jesus spoke of the end times on the Mt. Olivet
Jesus ascends into heaven from the Mt. Olivet

Jesus revealed his divine nature on Mt. Tabor.

Luke 9: 28-36
About eight days after Jesus said this, he took Peter, John and James with him and went up onto a mountain to pray. As he was praying, the appearance of his face changed, and his clothes became as bright as a flash of lightning. Two men, Moses and Elijah, appeared in glorious splendor, talking with Jesus. They spoke about his departure, which he was about to bring to fulfillment at Jerusalem. Peter and his companions were very sleepy, but when they became fully awake, they saw his glory and the two men standing with him. As the men were leaving Jesus, Peter said to him, “Master, it is good for us to be here. Let us put up three shelters—one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah.” (He did not know what he was saying.)
While he was speaking, a cloud appeared and covered them, and they were afraid as they entered the cloud. A voice came from the cloud, saying, “This is my Son, whom I have chosen; listen to him.” When the voice had spoken, they found that Jesus was alone. The disciples kept this to themselves and did not tell anyone at that time what they had seen.
So this is clearly the most significant “mountaintop experience” in scripture.
The question becomes : how do we maintain that connection to God when we come down from the mountain?
Our hearts connect with the heart of God, our minds connect with the mind of God, our souls connect with the Spirit of God.
That connection is what is important.  Everything else (religion) is a RESPONSE to the connection we feel with the heart of God.
We are made to seek after God, but often we run from Him.
Christ enables the connection
Why does God bring us to the mountain?
1.  To give us vision or point the way, or demonstrate his power.
2. To give us momentum when going through the valley
3. To give us something to move toward
We have to walk in many different places
1. Mountains – God shows us vision on the mountain.   (Deut. 34:1-4)
Then Moses climbed Mount Nebo from the plains of Moab to the top of Pisgah, across from Jericho. There the Lord showed him the whole land—from Gilead to Dan, 2 all of Naphtali, the territory of Ephraim and Manasseh, all the land of Judah as far as the Mediterranean Sea, 3 the Negev and the whole region from the Valley of Jericho, the City of Palms, as far as Zoar. 4 Then theLord said to him, “This is the land I promised on oath to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob when I said, ‘I will give it to your descendants.’ I have let you see it with your eyes, but you will not cross over into it.”
2. Valleys – God does miracles in the valley  (Ezek 37:1-10)
The hand of the Lord was on me, and he brought me out by the Spirit of the Lord and set me in the middle of a valley; it was full of bones. 2 He led me back and forth among them, and I saw a great many bones on the floor of the valley, bones that were very dry. 3 He asked me, “Son of man, can these bones live?”
I said, “Sovereign Lord, you alone know.”
4 Then he said to me, “Prophesy to these bones and say to them, ‘Dry bones, hear the word of the Lord! 5 This is what the Sovereign Lord says to these bones: I will make breath enter you, and you will come to life. 6 I will attach tendons to you and make flesh come upon you and cover you with skin; I will put breath in you, and you will come to life. Then you will know that I am theLord.’”
7 So I prophesied as I was commanded. And as I was prophesying, there was a noise, a rattling sound, and the bones came together, bone to bone. 8 I looked, and tendons and flesh appeared on them and skin covered them, but there was no breath in them.
9 Then he said to me, “Prophesy to the breath; prophesy, son of man, and say to it, ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: Come, breath, from the four windsand breathe into these slain, that they may live.’” 10 So I prophesied as he commanded me, and breath entered them; they came to life and stood up on their feet—a vast army.
3. Plains  – we have to remember the vision and rehearse the miracles.  In other words, be faithful.  (Matt 4:1-11)
Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. And after fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry. And the tempter came and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, command these stones to become loaves of bread.” But he answered, “It is written,
“‘Man shall not live by bread alone,
but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’”
Then the devil took him to the holy city and set him on the pinnacle of the temple and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down, for it is written,
“‘He will command his angels concerning you,’
and
“‘On their hands they will bear you up,
lest you strike your foot against a stone.’”
Jesus said to him, “Again it is written, ‘You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.’” Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory. And he said to him, “All these I will give you, if you will fall down and worship me.” 10 Then Jesus said to him,“Be gone, Satan! For it is written,
“‘You shall worship the Lord your God
and him only shall you serve.’”
11 Then the devil left him, and behold, angels came and were ministering to him.
“Rehearsing” means to act as if the miracle is happening every time..
